Accessing the CIT Public AppleShare server

CIT will disable AppleTalk access to the CIT Public AppleShare server on 30 June 1999. From then on, the CIT Public AppleShare server will be accessable via TCP/IP only. Bear Access, Macintosh Software, and other items are available from the CIT Public AppleShare server.

Accessing the server via the web

You can access and download many of the files from the CIT Public AppleShare server through the web at the following address:

http://appleshare.public.cornell.edu/

Accessing the server via a recent Mac OS Chooser

To connect to the Public AppleShare file server via TCP/IP, Macintosh desktops need the new Chooser that comes with Mac OS 8. This new TCP/IP aware Chooser can be installed on Macintoshes running MacOS 7.6 or later using the AppleShare Client 3.8. The installer for the AppleShare Client 3.8.x is available from the Public AppleShare server at

ftp://appleshare.public.cornell.edu/Mac%20OS/Other%20Apple%20Software/AppleShare%20Client%203.8.1.smi.bin

or from Apple at

ftp://ftp.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Macintosh/Networking-Communications/AppleShare_Client/.

To connect using the Chooser:

  1. Select Chooser from the Apple menu.
  2. Click on the AppleShare icon (at the upper-left corner of the Chooser window).
  3. Click the Server IP Address... button.
  4. Type "appleshare.public.cornell.edu" (without the quotation marks) into the box that is labeled Enter the Server Address.
  5. Click the Connect button.
  6. Click the Guest radio button and then click the Connect button.
  7. A list of available volumes will be displayed. Click on one or more of the volumes (but do not place a mark in any check boxes) and click the OK button to mount the volume(s) on your Macintosh's desktop.

When you are done using an AppleShare volume, drag it's icon from your desktop to the trashcan; doing so will unmount the volume, not delete it.

If you encounter any problems accessing the Public AppleShare server please contact the HelpDesk at 255-8990.
