Information from Cornell Information Technologies (CIT)

Windows 95 and NT systems on the Ithaca campus and at other sites have fallen victim to attacks which exploit loopholes in these operating systems. These attacks will crash the machine, either with an error message or a blank screen. The immediate solution is to reboot the system. For general information on this particular event, see ftp://ftp.cert.org/pub/cert_summaries/CS-98.02. To prevent future attacks, you will need to install software patches. CIT has published "Windows Security Information for the Cornell Community," which includes general information on forms of attack and preventative measures.

The Microsoft Windows 95 kernel update, which repairs a memory leak that occurs when opening and closing network sockets, is available on the CIT ftp server at ftp://www.cit.cornell.edu/pub/windows/win95fixes.

The first Windows 95 service pack is available in the ftp://www.cit.cornell.edu/pub/windows/win95fixes/servpack1 directory.
