Prepress Guidelines

To ensure the fastest possible processing time for your printing jobs, please make sure you have not skipped any of the steps below. Skipping any of the following may cost you extra time and money.

Prepress steps:

  • Margins are set as follows: color prints up to tabloid size (11 inches by 17 inches) need .25 inch margins on all sides; poster prints up to 3 feet wide need 1.5 inch margins on both sides; printing press documents up to tabloid size need a .25 inch margin on one edge, which must be the smaller dimension (e.g. a .25 inch margin on one of the 8 inch edges for letter (8 inch by 11inch) paper.

  • Ensure that the document size settings in the file are accurate.

  • Any partitions (for folding, cutting etc) are set accurately.

  • Bleeds extend at least 1/8" beyond the publication's size.

  • Images are all high resolution (300 dpi).

  • Make a printout of the final document as you would like it to appear, at 100% size if possible.

Files to include:

  • A copy of each image used—even those that are included and not linked—preferably as TIFF or EPS

  • All fonts used in your project, including fonts used in any EPS images. On a Macintosh font files can be found in the Fonts folder inside your System Folder. On a PC truetype fonts have a .ttf extension and are in your \windows\system folder, postscript fonts have a .pfm extension and are probably found in your \psfonts\pfm folder.
