Corn Leaf Aphid - Damage to Sweet Corn

Click for larger image

Aphids appear in clusters on the leaves and upper part of the cornstalk where they suck juices from the plant tissue. They may completely cover large areas. The aphids secrete a sticky substance known as honeydew, causing the plant to become sticky with its accumulation and, in heavy infestations, interfering with pollination. Silks and tassels may also turn sooty black as mold grows on the honeydew. Clusters of aphids may cause leaf curl and yellow patches on leaves.

Corn leaf aphid also vectors maize dwarf mosaic virus of corn.
