Tarnished plant bugs thrive on a wide range of cultivated and
weed-type plants. In the early spring, when they first come out
of winter hibernation, they attack the buds of fruit trees injuring
the terminal shoots and fruit. They migrate to more succulent
plants such as herbaceous weeds, vegetables and flowers to feed
and lay eggs.
The sucking injury which they inflict on the host plant causes
fruit to be misshapen and plants to be stunted and distorted.
A favorite location for feeding is the petiole of buds of alfalfa,
beans, flowers, which causes the buds to drop and fruit and seeds
to shrivel.
