The larva are the most destructive stage, feeding on the roots of seedlings and boring into the stems of the host plants. Injury is more common in early spring crops planted in high organic soils. Plant populations can be reduced because of the early seedling feeding. The wireworms can be especially destructive to corn. Most older plants show little signs of damage.
