Our annual article on botanical insecticides (Scaffolds 8/4/97) stated that all agricultural uses of rotenone had been deleted from the label, due to the high cost of reregistration. After hearing from Brian Caldwell of Tioga Co. (N.Y.) Cooperative Extension that this was apparently not the case, we've dug up some additional information. Although some registrations have been discontinued, two companies, Webb Wright (Pyrellin E.C.) and Rockland (Rotenone-Pyrethrum Insecticide), have renewed registration of their rotenone products through the 1998 growing season. Both include fruit crops on their labels.
Brian also brought it to our attention that the futures of ryania and sabadilla are in question due to limited use. The registrant of ryanodine, the active ingredient of ryania, has submitted a Request for Cancellation, which means that ryanodine may well be lost as a pesticide. The EPA states that "Those who are concerned about the potential loss of [this active ingredient] for pesticidal use are encouraged to work directly with the registrant to explore the possibility of their withdrawing the request for cancellation." The registrant is Progressive Agri-Systems, Wind Gap, PA. We found no new information on sabadilla.
Scaffolds is published weekly from March to September by Cornell University - NYS Agricultural Experiment Station (Geneva), and Ithaca - with the assistance of Cornell Cooperative Extension. New York field reports welcomed. Send submissions by 3 p.m. Monday to:
