FIELD DAY ANNOUNCEMENT
It's not too early to mark your calendar for the annual N.Y. Fruit
Pest Control Field Day, which will take place during Labor Day week on
Sept. 8 and 9, as dictated by tradition. For those who keep track of such
things, were reverting to our traditional practice of holding the
Hudson Valley installment on the first day, and then moving to Geneva
for the western NY perspective on the second day. Activities will commence
in Highland on Wednesday, the 9th, with registration, coffee, etc., at
the Hudson Valley Laboratory, 8:30 am. The tour will proceed to the orchards
to view plots and preliminary data from field trials involving new fungicides,
miticides, and insecticides on apples. On Thursday, the 9th, Geneva participants
will register starting at 8:30 in the lobby of Barton Lab, after which
we will then view and discuss results from field trials on tree fruits
and grapes. It is anticipated that the tour of field plots will be completed
by noon. Save the dates.
LOTS FOR SALE
Yep, as Alfred E. Neuman would say, we still have lots of copies
of the Proceedings from our Apple IPM In-Depth School (held last March
in Geneva) for sale, and its still worthwhile to point out their
potential as a valuable reference resource in your apple management library.
This syllabus contains the proceedings plus supplementary references on
some 50 presentations given by 30 different speakers.

The topics run sequentially from the dormant season until post-harvest,
and cover management considerations for an extensive rundown of apple
pests arthropod, disease, weed, and mammal. 280 pages, including
misc. articles (NY Fruit Quarterly, J. Econ. Entomol., Mass. Fruit Notes),
plus several bulletins and manuals published by Cornell Coop. Ext. (Integrated
Weed and Soil Management in Fruit Plantings; Wildlife Damage Management
in Fruit Orchards), NRAES (Orchard Spraying: Getting Results; Hydraulic
nozzles for boom sprayers; On-Farm Agrichemical Handling Facilities),
USDA (Fire blight - Its nature, prevention, and control), and NYS-IPM
(Apple IPM: A Guide for Sampling and Managing Major Apple Pests in New
York State, 1999 Revision). The cost is $30 (or $25 if you pick it up
in person so I don't have to ship it); send me a check payable to "Cornell
University" or contact me if you need instructions on using a Purchase
Order.
