It all seems something of a chilly memory now, but this season actually started out to be quite a bit warmer than last year, and significantly warmer than the long-term average. A look at our degree-day accumulations in the "Upcoming Pest Events" section of the first several issues shows that it wasn't until well into June that we fell behind these benchmark comparisons, a trend reflected in the pest events and crop development markers that we annually keep track of. You'll notice that many of the events below having a "Normal" occurrence before mid-June were ahead of schedule this year, and those normally occurring after then were often quite delayed in 2000.

Following are comparative listings of some of the pest events that occured this season (in Geneva) with calendar and degree-day normals. The values and dates are given +/- one standard deviation; i.e., events should occur within the stated range approximately 7 years out of 10. An asterisk (*) signifies that a record was set or tied.
