3-D Structure of Molecules
The idea that molecules were made up of atoms arranged in a rigid 3-D structure was difficult for some people to imagine, especially certain leaders of the scientific community. The intelectual and social problem is clearly indicated in the article publish by H. Kolbe, J. pract. Chem. (2) 15, 473 (1877). The idea of 3-D structural complexity emerged ove r 100 years beginning in 1815.
- 1815 Biot - tartrate optical activity
- 1831 Berzelius - racemic acid (from grapes)
- 1841 Parteur - hemihedral crystalls
- 1874 van't Hoff & Le Bel - tetrahedral carbon.

These ideas lead ultimately to the notions of
- 3-D structure
- Functional groups
- Isomerism - Sterochemistry - Chirality
Gets complicated doesn't?
