My research work at Cornell, involved a development of a Liposome-immunomigration, liquid-phase competition (LIM-LPC) strip assay for the quantitation of naturally occurring glycoalkaloids from potatoes. This immunoassay uses efficiently the signal amplification power of dye encapsulating liposomes in the quantitation of the immunoreaction between antigen and liposomes in an heterogeneous format in which the separation of the non-bound components is achieved by capillary forces throughout a nitrocellulose strip. The strips in this format can be assembled in a portable and disposable device making it possible a close monitoring of the potato glycoalkaloids levels in an effort to improved food safety.
