   Program Overview

As leader of Cornell’s grape pathology program, my overarching objective is to develop and provide new information that will enable grape growers and their advisers to design and implement improved disease management programs applicable to their own specific and unique conditions.  Inherent to this objective is the desire to expand the science upon which such programs are based. Thus, I view the research and extension functions of my appointment as providing the framework for a programmatic continuum, which stretches from the development of both theoretical and "applied" research data through to its adaptation for, delivery to, and implementation by the end users. I also view my position as entailing an important liaison function between the grape industry and the academic community.  This requires that I assist in communicating relevant research needs of the industry to my peers, as well as assisting in the communication of their findings back to the industry.  As such, I try to maintain cooperative projects with a number of colleagues both within and outside my own disciplinary specialty, in order to broaden the scope of potential contributions.  Expansion of my program to include a formal teaching component, based upon organizing and presenting an undergraduate course in grape pest management, has provided an additional opportunity to broaden the educational offerings of my program and provide training in disease biology and management to the next generation of grape industry professionals.
