bacteria are grouped based on their common characteristic of causing spoilage of foods. There are as many different spoilage organisms as there are different kinds of foods. For example, meats that you commonly find on the retail display case of your local grocery store are spoiled by a group of bacteria known as Pseudomonas. Although many people think that spoilage bacteria cause nothing but problems but this is not always true. In some cases, spoilage organism grow on the food and by doing this, they use up the nutrients and prevent the growth of pathogenic bacteria that could cause disease if we ingested them. In some cases, pathogenic bacteria are capable of growing with spoilage bacteria in the food but since the spoilage bacteria have made the food undesirable for us to eat we throw out the food. In doing so, we prevent ourselves from contracting food borne illness.
