PROFESSIONAL OVERVIEW AND OBJECTIVES

I am an applied fruit crop physiologist. My goal is to do practical research and extension on fruit production problems that will increase the profitability and strength of the NY fruit industry and fruit growers around the world. I provide regular inservice training and field visits with extension field staff, on-farm workshops, field tours, presentations at grower meetings, in-depth schools and written articles. I am a regular invited speaker to fruit grower meetings around the country. My research is in 6 areas.

Orchard Systems: My goal is to understand the fundamental principles of orchard system performance and develop improved systems. I do indepth studies at Geneva and applied trials on grower's farms around the state in cooperation with extension field staff. This work is in cooperation with Steve Hoying.

Rootstocks: My goal is to evaluate apple rootstocks for adaptability and performance under New York conditions. I serve as the NY representative and as the national Apple Committee chair on the national rootstock testing project (NC-140) where we are testing rootstocks from around the world including new Cornell-Geneva series of rootstock. This work is in cooperation with Genarro Fazio of the USDA and Herb Aldwinckle.

Maximizing New Tree Growth: My goal is to understand factors influencing the growth and cropping of young fruit trees to reduce the turn-around time and investment associated with orchard renewal. This work is in cooperation with Alan Lakso, LaiLiang Chen, Ian Merwin and Herb Aldwinckle.

Crop Load and Canopy Management: My goal is to develop improved thinning and canopy management practices that improve fruit size and fruit quality while managing orchard tree canopies at a variety of tree densities. This work is in cooperation with Jim Schupp, and Alan Lakso. We are also part of an international project studying the effect of climate on growth and cropping of apple to determine the reasons why yields and size are greater in certain climates. This work is in cooperation with a group of leading international pomologists.

Irrigation/Fertigation: My goal is to develop irrigation and fertigation strategies and scheduling programs that will enhance fruit size and yield of both young and older orchards. This work is in cooperation with Alan Lakso.

Economics of Orchard Systems: My goal is to develop sound economic evaluations of different orchard systems to assist growers in making wise orchard investment decisions. This work is in cooperation with Steve Hoying, Alison DeMarree and Jerry White.

A second objective of mine is to provide leadership to the fruit research and extension team at Cornell to more effectively meet industry needs across all of our disciplines. To accomplish this goal I co-chair the Fruit Program Work Team where we obtain input from stakeholders and establish priorities for research and extension in fruit. I also serve on the advisory committees of all the tree fruit extension specialists. I have also led the effort to have more effective annual inservice training meetings for extension educators by combining our inservice meeting with Michigan and Ontario Canada. I serve on the board of the NYS Hort. Soc. board. I serve as editor, (along with Steve Hoying) of the NY Fruit Quarterly which is a research reporting magazine of the NYS Hort Society which aims to provide the fruit industry with regular communication on the progress of research programs at Cornell.
