Electronic Indexes:

Several hundred selected databases, Find Databases is used to find a database or search one or more databases simultaneously. Organized by subject and alphabetically as well as searchable.
AGRICOLA (WebSPIRS Web:1970-) covers a wide array of agricultural topics, indexing journal articles, conference proceedings, research reports, audiovisual materials and government documents. Beginning January 1, 2007, Agricola began indexing a significantly smaller number of journals than it had in the past. Although the database has retained the more complete indexing it had prior to 2007, search results for articles published after 2006 will be limited to the smaller number of journals now indexed.
BIOSIS Previews (ISI Web of Knowledge: 1926-) (BIOSIS Previews WebSPIRS is no longer available) cover original research reports and reviews in biological and biomedical areas. Coverage includes traditional areas of biology such as botany, zoology, and microbiology, as well as related fields such as biomedical, agriculture, pharmacology, and ecology. Also included are interdisciplinary fields such as medicine, biochemistry, biophysics, bioengineering, and biotechnology. BIOSIS combines the content from Biological Abstracts and Biological Abstracts/RRM. Available in two different interfaces.
CAB Abstracts (ISI Web of Knowledge: 1910-) (CAB Abstracts WebSPIRS is no longer available) covers the significant research and development literature in the fields of agriculture, forestry, aspects of human health, human nutrition, animal health and the management and conservation of natural resources.
Dissertation Abstracts (WebSPIRS Web:1861-1980) online is a definitive subject, title and author guide to virtually every American dissertation accepted at an accredited institution from 1861 through 1980.
With more than 2 million entries, ProQuest Dissertations & Theses (ProQuest: 1861-) is the most comprehensive resource for information about doctoral dissertations and master’s theses. Dissertations published from 1980 forward include 350-word abstracts written by the author. Master’s theses published from 1988 forward include 150-word abstracts. More than 600,000 are available in native or image PDF formats for immediate free download.
Food Science and Technology Abstracts: FSTA (ISI Web of Knowledge: 1969-) (FSTA WebSPIRS is no longer available) provides access to abstracts of the world’s food science, food technology, and food-related human nutrition literature. Coverage is 1969 to date and includes journals, patents, books, conference proceedings, reports, theses, standards and legislation.

Google Scholar provides a simple way to broadly search for scholarly literature. Many disciplines and sources: peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, abstracts and articles, from academic publishers, professional societies, preprint repositories, universities and other scholarly organizations.
LEXIS-NEXIS Academic provides access to full text resources on topics including current and general news; business and financial information; newspapers; company directories; government and politics; medical and health topics; accounting, auditing, and tax; federal and state laws; legal cases; and regulations. Resources include TV and radio news transcripts.
Medline (OCLC: 1965- ) is the OCLC FirstSearch index to over 3,500 journals published internationally, covering all areas of medicine, 1965 to the present. It contains all citations published in Index Medicus, and corresponds in part to the Index to Dental Literature and the International Nursing Index.
Medline (ISI Web of Knowledge: 1950- ) contains millions of records of journal articles in all areas of the life sciences, with particular emphasis on biomedicine. The articles indexed in MEDLINE were published in more than 4,600 international journals, published in over 30 languages. Source publications for MEDLINE cover basic biomedical research and the clinical sciences. Additional subject areas include nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, allied health, and pre-clinical sciences.
PubMed (National Library of Medicine: mid-1960's - present) provides access to over 16 million citations from MEDLINE and other life science journals for biomedical articles back to the 1950s. Includes links to many sites providing full text articles and other related resources.
Research Library (ProQuest: 1971-), formerly known as Periodical Abstracts, is a comprehensive that indexes and abstracts general interest magazines and scholarly journals in the social sciences, humanities and sciences. Modules cover arts, business, children, education, general interest, health, humanities, international studies, law, military, multicultural studies, psychology, sciences, social sciences, and women’s interests. Full text of many articles is provided.
Science Citation Index Expanded (1945-) is part of Web of Science, which also includes Social Science Citation Index and Arts & Humanities Citation Index. These ISI citation databases are multidisciplinary databases of bibliographic information indexed to be searched by subject, author, journal, and/or author address. They can also be used to find articles that cite a known author or work.

SciFinder Scholar (1907-) provides access to CAplus, a database of chemical literature and U.S. and foreign chemical-related patents, CASREACT, and the Registry database from Chemical Abstracts Service. Includes journal articles, book chapters, patents, conference proceedings, technical reports, substance database and dissertations covered in Chemical Abstracts as well as articles currently being indexed, book reviews and biographical information. Covers chemistry, biotechnology, agricultural chemistry, toxicology, environmental science, medicine, and food science, from 1907 to the present. Requires a special client and access is limited to on-campus use.
SciFinder Web provides access to several Chemical Abstracts Service databases, including Chemical Abstracts, Registry, CASREACT, CHEMLIST, and CHEMCAT. Users may search more than 27 million citations to the chemistry literature by topic, author, CAS Registry Numbers, patent number, and CAS abstract number. More than 33 million chemical substances may be searched by chemical name, chemical structure, CAS Registry Numbers, and formula. Users can also do substructure searching. Mode of access: World Wide Web. Access requires initial individual registration with a valid Cornell ID. Access is available after registration through the log-in validation link. Access restricted to subscribing institutions.
VITIS-VEA:Viticulture and Enology Abstracts is an international German or English-language literature database in the field of viticulture and enology. It covers grapevine morphology, physiology, and biochemistry, soil science, genetics and grapevine breeding, phytopathology and grapevine protection, cellar techniques, economics of viticulture and enology, and the microbiology of wine.
winefiles.org is a wine and grape bibliographic database. Coverage is worldwide (mostly 1988-present) with a special emphasis on California wine and grape history (1849-1999).
Zoological Record (ISI Web of Knowledge: 1864- ) (Zoological Record WebSPIRS is no longer available) provide worldwide coverage of zoological literature, with bibliographical references from more than 6,000 international journals, review annuals, monographs, meeting proceedings, books and reports, representing research in all major areas of zoology, including: behavior, ecology, evolution, genetics, habitat, nutrition, parasitology, reproduction, taxonomy, zoogeography. Available in two different interfaces.

There are literally several thousand online dictionaries available via the Library Catalog. Set limits to “networked resources” and do a keyword search on “dictionaries”. Narrow your search by adding a second search term, such as “biology”.

Statistics Sources
Agricultural Statistics is published each year to meet the diverse need for a reliable reference book on agricultural production, supplies, consumption, facilities, cost and returns. Its tables of annual data cover a wide variety of facts in forms suited to most common use.
2002 Census of Agriculture The National Agricultural Statistics Service provides timely, accurate, and useful statistics in service to U.S. agriculture. The Census of Agriculture is compiled every 5 years.
FAOSTAT Statistics Database is an on-line and multilingual database currently containing over 1 million time-series records covering international statistics in the following areas: Production, Trade, Food Balance Sheets, Food Aid Shipments, Fertilizer and Pesticides, Land Use and Irrigation, Forest Products, Fishery Products, Population, Agricultural Machinery.
Historical Statistics of the United States has long been the standard source for quantitative indicators of American history.
LexisNexis Statistical Universe is a comprehensive access to U.S. statistical information. Includes an index to over 100,000 U.S. government, state, local, privately-produced and international statistical publications from 1973 to present, abstracts and tables, and background information.
New York Agricultural Statistics Many reports, datasets, news releases and tables of agricultural statistics provided cooperatively by USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service and the NY Dept of Agriculture & Markets.
Statistical Abstract of the United States is a standard summary of statistics on the industrial, social, political, and economic organization of the United States. Annual updates.
USDA Economics, Statistics and Market Information System Contains nearly 300 reports and datasets from the economics agencies of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. These materials cover U.S. and international agriculture and related topics. Most reports are text files that contain time-sensitive information. Most datasets are in spreadsheet format and include time-series data that is updated yearly.

Prokaryotes A Handbook on the Biology of Bacteria, a 7 volume print work, is now available online to the Cornell community. Provided by Lee Library, it is a classic reference tool for bacteriologists and microbiologists.
