The Pherolist

by Heinrich Arn, Miklos Tóth and Ernst Priesner

last updated on this server on 2 September, 2000

The Pherolist was first published in 1986 as the brochure "List of Sex Pheromones of Lepidoptera and Related Attractants" by the International Organization for Biological Control, IOBC-OILB, West Palearctic Regional Section. In 1995 the material contained in the database was transferred to this website and updated regularly.

On 20 February 2004 a new Pherolist was created by Peter Witzgall, Tobias Lindblom, Marie Bengtsson and Miklós Tóth at http://www-pherolist.slu.se/pherolist.php. Please stand by to be redirected to the new database or continue by browsing the historic site.

About this website:
A database of chemical components identified in sex glands of female Lepidoptera insects and other chemicals attractive to male moths. Data are arranged in phylogenetic order and can be accessed via families, genera, species, common names and chemicals. The website is based on a book by Arn, Tóth & Priesner and maintained by Heinrich Arn.

the lady

Notice to authors: If you have published information you think should be included, please send a reprint to the contact address below. Moth pictures (as GIF / JPEG files) are equally welcome and will be acknowledged.

Thanks: The winged lady, mascot of the Working Group on pheromones and other semiochemicals of the International Organization of Biological Control (IOBC), was created by Regula Küng for the 1979 meeting in Wädenswil, Switzerland. Lidia Pop helped drawing chemical structures for the Pherolist, Ashraf El-Sayed scanned many of the insect pictures. Anna-Carin Bäckman helped with the Swedish names of insects.

History: The Pherolist started out in 1995 in Terry Acree's sandbox. If you are interested in human semiochemistry, check out Terry's Flavornet, a database of structures, sensory descriptors and retention indices of 346 natural flavor chemicals. It is currently being updated with a new set of data. Check back soon.

Please note: Although I try to list the species in a reasonable order, this database is by no means a taxonomic textbook. Where possible I followed Patrice J.A. Leraut, Liste systématique et synonymique des lépidoptères de France, Belgique et Corse (deuxième édition), 1997, supplément à Alexanor, 45, rue de Buffon, F-75005 Paris.
