Screening New York Plum Varieties for Susceptibility to Black Knot

(Last updated: April 24, 2003)

Introduction - In an effort to diversify, some growers have planted plums. These fruits are particularly valuable in the Green Markets of New York City. In the summer 2001 edition of the New York Fruit Quarterly an article describing the characteristics of several varieties of plums suited to New York was published. Several of these varieties are new to the region and have not been extensively grown in commercial production. One of the limiting factors in growing plums in New York is their susceptibility to black knot. Therefore, several of the varieties that were highlighted in the New York Fruit Quarterly will be screened for their susceptibility to black knot.
