Introduction
As I started working at the Station, I was not sure
what the job would entail totally. I knew there would be greenhouse work
and lab work but was still curious and very willing to discover new things.
From the day I arrived on the scene, Bill and Cathy have taught me more
about fruit disease then I thought I would ever know during my lifetime.
We work with peach and cherry bacterial diseases
and strawberry leaf diseases. Currently, in the greenhouse, I tag strawberry leaves when they first open. I also check the plants
for anything unusual and water them. I count the insects that get caught
on our cards every week. I enjoy working in the greenhouse
and seeing the strawberries grow. In the lab I work closely
with Cathy Heidenreich. I have learned many things, from simple to more
complex tasks. I have learned how to ready glassware for the autoclave
and how to pour media into plates. I am constantly learning about
strawberries and cherries and am looking forward to learning more.
I like this job because I get to exercise my mind
and learn new things. I constantly have different things to do and work
is not always a routine day in and day out. I enjoy the opportunity to
get up and walk around, even if it is just to the greenhouse. There is
always something to do so sitting around is not a habit. I am looking forward
to when I start working full time again this summer so I can continue work in this field. I
am majoring in Biology at SUNY OSWEGO and plan to go into the Plant Pathology field
after I finish with college. Luckily, through this job, I found what I would like to do for a
profession, Plant Disease Epidemiology. :-D
