   Program Overview

As the Fruit IPM Coordinator, I work closely with the faculty of the Department of Plant Pathology to develop and deliver IPM programs that tree fruit, grape, and berry growers use to address pest management issues in New York State.  Current program activities include developing the New York Integrated Fruit Production Protocol for Apples, IPM Elements for Apple in New York, assisting growers in meeting market audit and reporting requirements, developing IPM workbooks and worksheets for grower self-evaluation and goal-setting, expanding the NEWA network of weather stations to deliver pest forecast models and weather information online, and assessing the level and predominance of resistance to fungicides in Venturia inaequalis in the Northeast. My long-term research objectives include developing, validating and implementing disease and arthropod computer forecast models with emphasis on the effect of atmospheric humidity on the course of plant disease epidemics, and exploring practices that promote soil health and increase plant resistance.
