Overview |
|
Throughout my career, my research has focused upon the biology
and epidemiology of bacterial and fungal pathogens and improved
disease management. For seven years I studied airborne fungal
pathogens and the diseases they cause on papaya and macadamia in
the high rainfall area of the Big Island of Hawaii. This
taught me to appreciate tropical plant pathology, the complexity
of field biology, and the difficulty of conducting field trials
to improve practical disease management. I also had extensive direct
contact with growers and extension personnel, and learned to understand
their needs and how to communicate with them.
The biology and epidemiology of both bacterial and fungal diseases
of vegetable crops was the focus of my program in New York. Host-plant
resistance, including cooperative research with a plant breeder,
became a dominant theme of my control studies, although extensive
trials were conducted to evaluate new fungicides and application
practices based on knowledge of the field biology. The molecular
genetics of bacterial pathogens was emphasized later in my career
to improve understanding of the biology of some of these pathogens. I
maintain an interest in many facets of research on bacterial and
fungal plant diseases, outreach programs, and graduate student
mentoring.
