Division of Effort
Research - 100%, Viral diseases of vegetables and sources of resistance

   Program Overview

The objectives of my research program are the identification of viruses occurring in vegetable crops and their biological control. Thus, a major emphasis has been directed toward the search for natural sources of resistance utilizing domestic and foreign introduction of cultivated and wild species of beans, crucifers, cucurbits, lettuce, peas, peppers, spinach, tomatoes, and other crops. A large number of resistance factors have been found and characterized2 4 5. Studies on linkages and mapping of resistance factors, and utilization of isozymes as markers have received particular emphasis. In recent years, advances in biotechnology have offered viral coat protein and replicase genes, and some of them have been successfully incorporated in cucurbits and tomatoes1. A thorough study has been conducted on the occurrence of strains and pathotypes of each virus and their impact upon resistant germplasm. Hence, in several cases, the resistance was demonstrated to be strain specific. Also, research has been directed toward the effect of environmental factors able to modify or suppress the expression of resistance genes.

The role of non-parasitic genetic factors able to incite symptoms mimicking those caused by viral infections has been investigated3. Future research activity will involve the examination of fields and greenhouses for unusual outbreaks of viral diseases, and identification of the causal agents from specimens received from extension personnel, growers, and seed producers. The search for natural sources of resistance and development and utilization of coat protein and replicase genes will continue, particularly for those diseases for which resistance factors are not presently available. The research on other phases of the program described above will continue. However, the utilization of resistance genes in the development of new cultivars, and close cooperation with vegetable breeders of public and private institutions will continue to be the ultimate goal of the entire research program.
