   Program Overview

As Plant Pathologist at Cornell University’s Hudson Valley Laboratory in Highland, NY, my research program focuses on finding immediate solutions to disease problems on tree fruits. Field tests are conducted each year to evaluate new fungicides and management strategies for apple diseases. Fungicides are evaluated for effectiveness against apple scab, powdery mildew, rust diseases, sooty blotch, flyspeck, black rot, and bitter rot. I also conduct research on postharvest decays of apples in storage, with particular emphasis on decays caused by Penicillium expansum. Inoculum sources, infection sites, and control strategies for P. expansum are being studied in commercial apple storages. Disease susceptibility of new apple cultivars is being studied in conjunction with the USDA Multistate Project NE-183,. As part of my Cooperative Extension program, I monitor the development of apple scab, rust diseases, and fire blight each season and provide timely reminders and "disease alerts" to county-based fruit extension educators, regional extension specialists, fruit industry consultants, and fruit growers. This information is disseminated by e-mail, code-a-phone, and via the weekly Scaffolds Fruit Journal.
