Vitis vinifera vines are very intolerant of soil pH's less than 5.5, while American cultivars are often more suited to low soil pH. All soils in New York state had a pH of less than 7.3. The coarse nature of the data base means that some smaller scale features are overlooked. The Lake Erie grape belt area is mostly comprised of lacustrine sediments that have high pH’s, however the area has glacial tills with pH’s around 5 which do not appear on the map.
