4.3 Available water holding capacity

A high water holding capacity is an advantage, especially since most vineyards in New York State are unirrigated. The majority of the soils in the county can hold 0.15 to 0.2 inches per inch of soil. There is a large area in the center of the county that can hold less, and small isolated areas that hold more.
