   Research Focus

My interests involve conducting applied research to help develop improved programs and management tools that growers will readily adopt on the farm and thereby contribute to more sustainable agricultural practices.  As part of a multi-state project, I am currently working to further develop an IPM program for carrot production in New York with an emphasis on leaf blight disease and nematode management.  The use of a 25% disease incidence threshold to trigger the first fungicide application and scouting of individual cultivars to determine subsequent applications has significantly reduced the number of fungicide sprays during the season.  I am also working with the Cornell soil health work team to assess the effect of crop and soil management practices on potential crop root health and pathogenic and beneficial nematode populations through use of soil bioassays and direct nematode extraction and enumeration methods.

   Professional Experience
2003-present Postdoctoral Fellow, Department of Plant Pathology, Cornell University.
2001-2004 Graduate Research Assistant, Department of Plant Pathology, The Pennsylvania State University.  I conducted Koch’s postulates with Cylindrocarpon destructans isolated collected from declining grapevines in Pennsylvania to provide a better understanding of host-pathogen interaction.  I also conducted a field trial in a vineyard block known to be infested with C. destructans to evaluate the infection and colonization of young rooted grapevines by C. destructans under different treatment conditions.  Then I evaluated the suppressiveness of different types of composted soil amendments, yard trimmings, animal manure, poultry manure and vermicompost on C. destructans.  Individual compost microorganisms were isolated and evaluated for their suppressive effect on C. destructans in vitro.
1998-2001 Graduate Research Assistant, Department of Plant Pathology, The Pennsylvania State University.  For my master’s work, I developed and implemented a survey tool to obtain vineyard background information that was administered to Pennsylvania vineyard managers.  Then I isolated and identified potential biological factors in grapevine decline in Pennsylvania including fungi, nematodes and viruses.  I placed an emphasis on identifying potential soil-borne root pathogens.
Falls 1999 and 2000 Teaching Assistant, Department of Plant Pathology, The Pennsylvania State University.  I prepared laboratory materials including quizzes, lectures, diseased plant material, and culture plates.  I also led a laboratory section and graded lab reports, papers, and exams for undergraduate and graduate introductory plant pathology course.
