I am interested in the interactions between pathogens and disease resistance gene(s) at the molecular level. In my earlier research, I studied the mapping of downy mildew resistance genes with particular emphasis on resistance gene analogs (RGAs) in North American grapevine species such as Vitis cinerea and V. rupestris. I presently am using various molecular technologies to identify novel resistance genes or disease resistant cultivars. The QTL mapping of SSRs, AFLP and SNP markers will provide markers associated with disease resistance genes. Thus, marker assisted selection (MAS) will allow us to screen non-transgenic breeding populations rapidly and eliminate susceptible individuals, increasing the efficiency of combining disease resistance with horticultural and quality traits. Also, gene silencing techniques will be use to identified function of powdery mildew resistance genes (such as Mlo, Pmr) in grapevine. In parallel, I am studying on gene-for-gene resistance to grape powdery mildew. We will characterize the plant-pathogen interactions, in term of race-specificity and microscopic analysis for each of three resistance source from Asian and North American Vitis spp.
