Food Science

Betsy Bihn, Food Science, demonstrated proper hand washing technique using glo-germ, a lotion which glows under ultraviolet light.  Children washed their hands for 5 seconds, 10 seconds and 20 seconds to see which would get hands cleanest.

20 seconds of scrubbing proved best.

We found that washing hands for 20 seconds works best.  Betsy also taught the students that singing the ABC song takes about 20 seconds, so they should always sing the ABC song while they wash their hands.

sample pudding.

Exploring food components by making pudding with different types of milk was a fun and tasty experiment led by Melissa Mundo and Katherine Kittel, Food Science and Technology. The difference in texture between pudding made with whole, skim and soy milk was remarkable. Additionally we noticed that the source of milk affected the flavor of pudding. Katherine also led the group in a demonstration of the effect of sugar or lemon juice on the flavor of grape juice.
