GENEVA, NY: Congressman Sherwood Boehlert (R-23rd District) will participate in a forum on "Science, Agriculture, and the Economy," at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva, NY, on Thursday, October 24, from 3-4 pm, in the auditorium of Jordan Hall.

"The role of the Experiment Station and the Cornell Agriculture and Food Technology Park in upstate economic development will be addressed," said James E. Hunter, director of the Experiment Station.

Rep. Boehlert, Chairman of the House Science Committee, and a leading advocate of agriculture and environmental interests in Congress, will have the opportunity to respond first-hand to issues and opportunities related to food, agriculture, and economic development from a panel of industry leaders. The panel includes Joe Nicholson, owner of Red Jacket Orchards; Scott Osborn, owner of Fox Run Winery; Tom Facer, vice president of Agricultural Services at Agrilink, a food processing company in Rochester; and Mike Manikowski, director of the Ontario County Office of Economic Development. Margaret Becker, deputy commissioner of the New York State Department of Agriculture & Markets, will moderate the event.

Congressman Boehlert, who was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1982, is seeking re-election in his newly re-drawn 24th Congressional district which now includes all of Chenango, Cortland, Herkimer, and Seneca counties, and parts of Broome, Cayuga, Oneida, Ontario, Otsego, Tioga, and Tompkins counties.

Congressman Boehlert has served on the House Committee on Science since 1983, and was elected chairman in January 2001. The Committee has jurisdiction over all federal non-military scientific and technology research and development programs, on which the federal government spends more than $30 billion a year. The committee oversees the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and the science programs of the Environmental Protection Agency and the Departments of Commerce and Energy.

"Congressman Boehlert has been a strong advocate to increase funding for scientific research, as evidenced by his support to double the National Science Foundation budget," said Hunter. Cornell University scientists at the Experiment Station rely heavily on grants from scientific research and development agencies to conduct their work.

Congressman Boehlert's will be available to meet with the audience after his remarks. The public is invited to attend.
