GENEVA,
NY: Jan P. Nyrop has been named chairman of Cornell
University's department of entomology in Ithaca, NY, effective
July 1.
"My decision to become chairperson in Ithaca can be explained
in one complex word - citizenship," Nyrop said. "Entomology
as a field of research and education is strong at Cornell because
of the synergies that arise from the two entomology departments
on the Geneva and Ithaca campuses. Neither department alone can
provide the depth of research, instructional and extension expertise
that results from both departments being vigorous and vibrant enterprises."
Nyrop plans to maintain his long-term commitment to the Experiment
Station and entomology department at Geneva. In the short term,
he will devote a good portion of his energy to helping the Ithaca
department realize its potential.
Nyrop develops tools required for the biologically based management
of arthropods in horticultural crops. He is particularly interested
in mite predator-prey interactions in apple and grape.
Nyrop received his B.S. from the University of Maine in 1977,
and his M.S. and Ph.D. from Michigan State in 1979 and 1982, respectively.
He was appointed assistant professor of entomology at Cornell in
1985, associate professor in 1992, and full professor in 1999.
Wendell Roeloffs, the Liberty Hyde Bailey Professor of Insect
Biochemisty, will continue as chairman of Cornell's department
of entomology at Geneva, a position he has held since 1991.
