Terry Bates is appointed as the first director of the Cornell Lake Erie Research and Extension Laboratory
Terry Bates, senior research associate in Cornell’s Department of Horticultural Sciences, has been appointed as the first director of the Cornell Lake Erie Research and Extension Laboratory (CLEREL) located in Portland, New York. The construction of CLEREL was recently completed and an official ribbon cutting ceremony will be held on August 25.
Bates joined the research and extension team at the Fredonia Vineyard Laboratory shortly after receiving his Ph.D. from the Pennsylvania State University in 1998. He has achieved an international reputation for excellence in viticulture research focusing on vineyard management and innovative viticultural practices. Bates is highly respected as a scientist by his academic peers and industry stakeholders for his contributions to viticultural research, especially vineyard nutrient management, effective pruning techniques and vineyard mechanization.
Research and extension programs led by Cornell faculty and staff represent 100 years of accomplishment in the Lake Erie region. The new, state-of-the art facility at Portland will foster research and extension programs leading to significant improvements in the profitability of juice, wine and associated industries of the Lake Erie region, across New York and beyond.
