GENEVA, NY: The director of the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station has a new tray on which to serve afternoon tea. The Station has been named the recipient of the 2002 Perpetual Winegrape Productivity Tray for exceptional contributions to the growth and development of the U.S. wine industry. For each of the last 18 years, the Vinifera Wine Growers Association (VWGA), of Alexandria, Virginia, has awarded the tray to an individual or organization that has made exceptional contributions to the industry.

The tray is a two-foot long, solid silver champagne service with a sculpted wine and grape border, and engraved grapes and vines on the inner oval. The logo of the VWGA is engraved in the center. The names of past winners are engraved on the back of the tray, including: Douglas P. Moorhead or Presque Isle Wine Cellars in Pennsylvania; Dr. G Hamilton Mowbray, Viticulturist, Enologist, Wine Educator; and Senator John W Warner.

The Station is the first awardee ever named from New York State. Tim Martinson, extension educator for the Finger Lakes Grape Program in Penn Yan, NY, accepted the award for the Station at the 27th Annual Virginia Wine Festival.

The tray will be displayed in the Frank A. Lee Library, at the Experiment Station in Geneva, NY, for one year.

"We are very honored to receive this award," said James E. Hunter, director of the Station, and reassures readers it will be used for display purposes only.
